Road Safety, Travel and Transport

This new page will give information and updates on matters concerning road safety, transport and travel which have been discussed at meetings of the Community Council. It will also include LDCC reponses to CEC consultations on these matters.

Lasswade Road and Burdiehouse Road – confusing speed limit signs

Summary

This has been raised at a number of recent meetings. On both roads (Lasswade Road south of junction with Captains Road the limit for southbound traffic is 30mph as their is no change in signage travelling south – side roads accessing Burdiehouse Road from east show 30 mph signage.

For northbound traffic on either road it is not clear if the 40mph limits south of the by pass are cancelled. There is no signage indicating this furthe complicated by several access roads indicating 40mph.

LDCC has written to CEC councillors asking that signage be made consistent.

Other issues that have been discussed include (more detail and links to relevant papers and LDCC responses will be given over next few weeks.

Liberton Road Liberton Brae junction

This is a very longstanding issue, with particular concern being the lack of signalised pedestrian crossings on the Mayfield Road and Kirk Brae arms. It is the only junction of seven in the immadiate area which does not allow pedestrians to cross each arm using signalised crossings. This is a major barrier to active travel.

LDCC have made several appeals to CEC including deputations. Our local CEC councillors support us. We are particularly disappointed that the external consultancy report for the recent CEC Major Junctions Review places this junction at 33 in a list of 40 junctions across Edinburgh, meaning there is little likelihood of the problems being addressed soon.

Speed limit reviews

  1. Roll out of 20 mph limit on urban roads – report and consultation.

LDCC approved the current reduction to 20 mph in local streets and in the CEC consultation requested that Kirk Brae, Lasswade Road to Captains Road, Liberton Drive to the Liberton Tower complex / Meadowhead Farm Road a.lso be reduced to 20mph.  On Kirk Brae and Lasswade Road , LDCC is particularly concerned about the narrowness of the pavements leading to the junction with Mount Vernon Road and Kirkgate, especially as these are used for access to Liberton  Nursery School and to Liberton Kirk and halls.

Kaimes Junction

The major re-alignment consulted upon in the summer of 2022 is not being progressed at current time. This is not the same as the more recent changes to bus lanes and carriage ways.  The major re-alignment is unlikely to occur in the near future partly due to  funding not being currently available,  in addition to fact that there was debate about the routing of cycle lanes through and around the the junction.

Kirk Brae pedestrian crossing at Orchardhead Road

On a positive note for this new page LDCC was delighted to see the installation of this crossing in the summer of 2023 after a ‘walk to school’ campaign by Liberton Primary School Association and the Liberton Association supported by our local MP. LDCC understands the finance for the crossing came from a budget associated with school travel.
